Roy Keane calls Jack Wilshere the ‘most overrated player on the planet’

Is it possible to get so deep into character that you lose sight of who you are and who the part is?

If that is the case Roy Keane has been method acting for the past 30 years.

Last week it was calling Liverpool and Spurs embarrassing after statement performances in Europe, this week he is taking aim Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere and it is not pretty.

Arsenal nearly suffered the biggest upset in European football history, yes bigger than Istanbul, to a club that was playing in the Swedish fourth division in 2011.

The Gunners were sitting pretty with a 3-0 lead from the tie in Sweden and were clearly so complacent they nearly threw it away.

Ostersunds burst into a two-goal lead inside 24 minutes and the jitters around the Emirates were palpable.

Sead Kolasinac’s goal calmed some nerves but Arsenal still managed to lose at home to a tiny Swedish club that had never reached this stage before.

Social media slated the Gunners’ performance and the way Arsene Wenger set up the team, everyone was poor but none more so than Wilshere.

Keane, sitting on the ITV sofas didn’t hold back when it came to his criticism of Arsenal’s injury-plagued midfielder.

Arsenal fans have kept the faith with Wilshere hoping he can fill the Santi Cazorla-shaped hole in midfield, but he was guilty giving the ball away far too easily and being overrun by Ostersunds attackers.

“Where do I start… I think Arsenal are a great example on how not to start a game of football. We can talk about being a shambles but they’re so slow out of the blocks – poor attitude,” began Keane’s savagery of the Gunners on ITV.

“The manager summed it up. No energy, no desire, you’re looking for your senior players to lead by example.

“I always think, when Wilshere’s your captain, to me, probably the most overrated player on the planet.

“And they got lucky with the result at the end of it. But if you start a game slowly, no matter how good you are, it’s hard to get going. You can’t just switch it on and off.”

However, Arsene Wenger wasn’t going to take this lying down and although he was furious with his players last night, he defended Wilshere in his press conference this morning.

“It’s very difficult, I personally rate Jack very highly. After that you can have opinions.

“Jack was in the team last night and didn’t perform well. Was it one of his best performances? Certainly not. But Roy Keane knows that can happen to everybody.”

Ostersunds fans are hard as nailsPA:Press Association

It was certainly not one of Wilshere’s best performances in an Arsenal shirt as Arsenal suffered one of the worst results in their history just a few days before they meet Man City in the league cup final on Sunday.

Will Wilshere keep his place for the big one?

Only Wenger knows.

Coutinho scores as Barcelona reach 5th straight Copa final

MADRID — Another year, another Copa del Rey final for Barcelona.

Philippe Coutinho scored his first goal since leaving Liverpool as Barcelona defeated Valencia 2-0 Thursday to reach the Copa final for the fifth straight season.

Ivan Rakitic also scored in the second leg of the semifinals, giving Barcelona a 3-0 win on aggregate after a 1-0 victory in the opener at Camp Nou Stadium.

The three-time defending champions next face Sevilla in a repeat of the 2016 final.

Sevilla eliminated Leganes 3-1 on aggregate on Wednesday.

"It’s not an easy feat to make it to the final this many times in a row," Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde said. "We knew it wasn’t going to be easy."

Valencia posed a tough challenge for Barcelona, creating some significant scoring chances at Mestalla Stadium, but the visitors opened the scoring in the 49th minute after Luis Suarez raced past a defender inside the area before crossing the ball to Coutinho. The Brazilian playmaker, Barcelona’s most expensive signing, slid to reach the ball and sent it toward the far corner.

Coutinho, making his fifth appearance since being signed in January, had only entered the match at halftime.

"It’s a special moment for me," Coutinho said. "I had been trying to score this first goal. I finally got it today and it helped the team advance to the final."

Suarez also set up the second goal, finding Rakitic for an easy shot from inside the area after a breakaway in the 82nd minute.

Valencia forward Rodrigo hit the woodwork early in the match.

"We had our chances," Valencia coach Marcelino Garcia Toral said. "But they were superior. We competed well but we are not at the same level right now."

It was the sixth straight loss for Valencia in all competitions.

"It hurts because we had high expectations coming into this match," Valencia goalkeeper Jaume Domenech said. "But it wasn’t meant to be. We need to work harder to try to turn things around."

Valencia was attempting to make it to the Copa final for the first time since 2007-08, when it won its seventh title after eliminating Barcelona in the semifinals.

Barcelona, which has won the tournament a record 29 times, had eliminated Valencia in the semifinals two years ago, winning 7-0 at Camp Nou in the first leg. It then held on to a 1-1 draw at Mestalla with its second-stringers.

Colombian defender Yerry Mina made his Barcelona debut on Thursday by replacing Gerard Pique late in the match. Pique had been listed as doubtful because of a knee injury.
